In addition to the functionality of the Diabetes Personal Calculator, the Diabetes Manager adds the functionality of:

  • Creating a personal favorites database
  • Creating personal food items
  • Recording daily pre-meal blood glucose, meal food items, suggested, actual and long acting insulin doses
  • Viewing reports for the last 1, 7, 14, 21, or 31 days
  • Emailing reports in HTML format which can be opened by a web browser
  • Emailing reports in CSV format which can be opened by Excel or spreadsheet applications

Diabetes Manager calculates a suggested pre-meal insulin dose of fast or rapid acting insulin, based on your current pre-meal blood glucose reading, your target blood glucose, your Correction Factor, the carbohydrate value of the meal or snack you are about to consume, and your Carbs/Insulin Ratio, using the formula provided in the Calculations section below.

Diabetes Manager will also calculate a bolus insulin dose of fast or rapid acting insulin based on your Correction Factor.

Diabetes Manager allows you to look up the carbohydrate values of common foods from its built in generic food database, and enables you to create your own database of favorite foods and meals, brand-name foods, and restaurant meals.

Diabetes Manager enables you to save carbohydrate intake, foods and meals consumed, insulin doses, bolus doses, and blood glucose readings to a diary, from which reports can be emailed to your computer and/or to your physician. It will also allow you to save your daily long acting insulin dose.

Diabetes Manager is a tool designed to give you convenience. It must only be used as a guide, and upon advice and consultation with your physician.

Calculations

Diabetes Manager is implemented with the following formula based on your current pre-meal blood glucose reading, your target blood glucose, your Correction Factor, the carbohydrate value of the meal or snack you are about to consume, and your Carbs/Insulin Ratio, to calculate your suggested fast, or rapid acting, pre-meal insulin dose:

(Current BG – Target BG) / Correction Factor
+ Carbs / (Carbs/Insulin Ratio)
= Suggested Insulin

Correction Factor
The Correction Factor is a formula to calculate how much insulin is required to bring down a high blood sugar into the target range, or to bring up a low blood sugar into the target range.
If you are measuring your blood glucose in mg/dl this formula is calculated by dividing your total daily insulin dose into either 1500, if you use one of the fast acting insulins, or 1800, if you use one of the newer rapid acting insulins.
If you are measuring your blood glucose in mmol/l this formula is calculated by dividing your total daily insulin dose into either 83, if you use one of the fast acting insulins, or 100, if you use one of the newer rapid acting insulins.
The Correction Factor is also used by the Diabetes Personal Manager to calculate a bolus insulin dose.

Carbs/Insulin Ratio
This is also known as your Carbohydrate Factor and is a figure that is calculated by dividing the carbs in your meal by the number of units of insulin necessary to keep your blood glucose in the normal range after your meal is consumed. This number, when divided by the number of carbs contained in a meal, will give the number of units of insulin necessary to inject. Because this number can sometimes vary throughout the day, we have provided the opportunity for you to enter up to six different ratios, for breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, mid afternoon snack, dinner, and evening snack. You can also use the mid morning snack, mid afternoon snack and evening snack options to calculate and record any bolus injections that may be necessary from time to time.

Data Persistence

You must click the Save button on the upper right corner to save the data you enter for each meal and for long acting. If you don’t click the Save button, the (new) data you enter for the meal/long acting will be cleared or refreshed with the previously saved data when you leave the meal/long acting view. After you save the data to the database, they can be viewed as reports and sent as email. Please email the reports to your computer for backup and clear your database on a regular basis.

Personal Settings

The following must be entered into “Settings” under the supervision of your physician:

  1. The unit of measurement your blood glucose monitor uses either mg/dl or mmol/l.
  2. Your target blood glucose measurement.
  3. Your Correction Factor.
  4. Your Carbohydrate to Insulin Ratio(s), or Carbohydrate Factor(s) for each meal and snack that you consume during the day.

Generic Food List

The carbohydrate figures, serving sizes and weights programmed into the Diabetes Manager by the authors under the list of “Generic Foods”, have been taken from data obtained from the National Agricultural Library, Agricultural Research Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture, USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 22.

Important

If you are in any doubt about the insulin dose suggested by the Diabetes Manager, or regarding any other matter concerning your diabetes management, your physician’s advice must always supercede any information provided by the Diabetes Manager.
